Workout Description

The Katy Trail is a 3.5-mile trail that was created on a defunct railroad. This is a “see and be seen” kind of trail since you can access quite a few restaurants along the trail, but is also used by serious athletes. Enjoy the paved trail or the extended sections of pedestrian-only trail. Find full trail details, including a map, parking info, and available restrooms, here: https://katytraildallas.org/trail-info/

The Katy Trail also offers various art pieces and some murals. Make sure to keep an eye (and ear) out for the green Monk Parakeets that have made their home along the Katy Trail.

Katy Trail Art, copy c/o Friends of the Katy Trail: “Katy Trail Art partners with Dallas area museums, artists, art collectors and the community at large to expand the role of contemporary art around Dallas. The Initiative borrows, commissions, and produces world-class art projects on and around the Katy Trail to inspire creativity, spark conversation, encourage self-reflection, challenge assumptions, foster community building, and promote civic ownership of the Katy Trail.”

The History of the Trail, c/o Friends of the Katy Trail: “In addition to being the premier destination for jogging, biking, skating, and walking in Dallas… The Katy Trail, as most locals know it, began in 2000, but the history of the Katy Trail stretches back nearly a hundred years to the age of railroads. Union Pacific Railroad built the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad and established the network in 1865 as the Southern Branch. The route was also commonly called the K-T, and eventually the Katy. Following the heyday of the railroad, Union Pacific donated the abandoned lines to the city of Dallas in 1993.” This space was then turned into Dallas’s Katy Trail.

The trail is beautifully maintained and is a great morning or afternoon activity. Just make sure to enjoy a coffee from one of the local shops off the trail or visit one of the restaurants for a beer along the way!
